Take It Personal

Developing your personal style. Some say it’s OK to steal looks from others - at least until you get enough confidence or knowledge so you no longer have to.

Others say you should learn the rules and then play around with them until you settle on a set of rules all your own.

I’m sure there’s of value in both these approaches.

But before going down either path, maybe you want to ask yourself why you want to develop a personal style in the first place?

Trying to get a girl? Trying to impress your mates? Want to show off how much money you’ve got? Or are you trying to be cool?

If you answer yes to one or more of these questions then I’d argue that you’ve got more chance of winning the lottery without a ticket than you have of developing a style of your own.Thing is, personal style isn’t about other people at all - it’s not about girlfriends or mates or money and it’s certainly not about cool.

Yes it’s about ‘style’, but it develops by focusing on the ‘personal’ part of the equation.
To me, personal style is like an ongoing dialogue you’re having with yourself - one which happens to be expressed through clothes.

How do you want to feel today? Who do you want to be right now? What could the best version of yourself look like at this moment in time?
It’s a private conversation the results of which other people get to observe, but where their opinions are totally irrelevant.

That’s because it’s personal. Images @dante.again
